A printable vehicle graphics preflight should confirm more than artwork size. Before ink reaches film, the shop needs agreement on the vehicle, panel geometry, media construction, printer workflow, laminate, cutting, installation handoff and acceptance standard. One missing decision can turn into a reprint after the panels are already laminated.
Use this checklist for commercial fleet graphics, partial wraps, spot graphics and other printed vehicle applications. It does not replace the instructions for the selected film, printer, ink or laminate.
1. Confirm the Actual Vehicle
Record the year, make, model, body configuration, wheelbase, roof height and aftermarket modifications. Photograph both sides, front, rear and critical details.
Do not rely only on a template name. Shelving, windows, ladders, body repairs, sensors, trim and replacement panels can change the printable and installable area.
Release evidence: vehicle ID, current photographs and signed scope.
2. Mark the Application Geometry
Divide the job into:
- flat panels;
- simple curves;
- compound curves;
- corrugations or rivets;
- channels and recesses;
- flexible trim, textured parts and excluded surfaces.
This map informs material selection and panel design. A film that is appropriate for a flat trailer side should not automatically be assumed suitable for a deep vehicle recess.

3. Define the Coverage Level
Clarify whether the order is:
- spot lettering or decals;
- printed spot graphics;
- partial wrap;
- full printed wrap;
- fleet replacement panel;
- temporary promotional graphic.
Coverage affects artwork bleed, seam planning, print order, installation time and future replacement strategy.

4. Preflight Artwork at Output Scale
Check:
- final dimensions and scale;
- raster resolution at output size;
- linked images;

- safe placement away from doors, handles, seams, sensors and wheel openings.

Record the exact media and why it fits the job. Review:
- approved printer and ink compatibility;
- surface and geometry limits;
- adhesive and liner behavior;

- removability and warranty conditions when applicable.

6. Lock the Printer, Ink, Profile and Mode
Document the production combination:
- printer model;
- ink set;
- RIP and profile;
- pass/quality mode;
- heater or curing settings where applicable;
- color-control target;
- media loading and take-up method.
Changing the profile or print mode can change ink load, color, drying behavior and dimensional response. A test made under one workflow does not automatically approve another.
Release evidence: saved job ticket or RIP preset.
7. Plan Drying, Curing or Outgassing
Follow the printer, ink and film instructions for the selected system. Record when printing ends and when lamination begins. Do not replace a documented interval with “it felt dry.”
If production timing is compressed, flag it before printing. Lamination, cutting and installation schedules should be built around the validated workflow rather than forcing the workflow into an arbitrary delivery time.

8. Confirm the Laminate Construction
Check that the overlaminate is approved for the printed media and intended geometry. Align roll widths where practical and confirm:
- finish;
- compatibility;
- application method;
- tension control;
- edge strategy;
- total construction behavior on curves;
- any required test or dwell interval.
The face film, printed ink layer, adhesive, liner and laminate act as one finished construction. Evaluate them together.

9. Build the Panel, Seam and Print Order
Before ripping the full job, decide:
- panel orientation;
- seam direction;
- overlap or butt-seam method if applicable;
- print sequence;
- color consistency plan across panels and vehicles;
- replacement strategy for commonly damaged areas;
- file naming and panel labels.
Print order matters when several vehicles need a consistent appearance. Use repeatable naming and keep the approved proof connected to every panel.

10. Run a Production-Representative Test
A useful test uses the actual:
- printer and ink;
- profile and mode;
- media and laminate;
- drying/curing interval;
- cutter if contour cutting is included;
- representative surface or geometry.
Test color, handling, lamination, cutting and application characteristics that matter to the job. Record observations rather than relying on memory.

11. Inspect Before Installer Handoff
Check every panel for:
- missing or duplicated panels;
- color inconsistency;
- banding, contamination or print defects;
- laminate silvering, tunneling, wrinkles or edge damage;
- incorrect trim, marks or labels;
- transport damage and tight winding;
- correct installation sequence.
If panels need to rest, acclimate or remain loosely wound, include that instruction in the handoff.

12. Define Acceptance and Traceability
The installer should receive:
- vehicle and panel map;
- panel sequence;
- material identification;
- current application instructions;
- exclusions and risk notes;
- customer-approved proof;
- contact for production questions.
Keep a retained sample, batch information and production timestamps. Traceability shortens troubleshooting if one vehicle or one batch behaves differently.
